Dr. Kent Hovind – A well known Creation Science speaker, debater, and evangelist. On January 19, 2007, Hovind was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Hovind’s wife, Jo Hovind, was later sentenced to 2 years.
Hovind’s views on government, the united States Constitution, income tax, private property, and a number of other items have often made him a subject of attack. Hovind has been accused of alleged assault and battery, declaring false bankruptcy, alleging threats against federal officials, alleged filling of false complaints, failing to get necessary building permits, and various tax-related charges. In 2002, he was charged with one count of felony assault, one count of misdemeanor battery, and one count of burglary with assault/battery. The charges were later dropped by the alleged victim, Hovind’s secretary.
On May 13, 1998, Hovind and his wife filled a document called “Power of Attorney and Revocation of Signature” with the Escambia County Clerk of Courts. The document reads, in part: “I/we do hereby revoke and make void… all signatures on any instruments…”. The Hovinds said they had signed government documents “due to the use of various elements of fraud and misrepresentations, duress, coercion, under perjury, mistake, ‘bankruptcy’.”
In the document, the Hovinds argue that Social Security is a ponzi scheme and is not mandatory. The Hovinds described the United States Government as a “bankrupt corporate government”, and said they were renouncing their United States citizenship and Social Security numbers.
“…We believe Hovind to be completely innocent of the alleged crime of “tax evasion”, and furthermore believe Hovind’s 10 year sentence to be patently unjust and based upon an effort to silence his ministry…”
Hovind has offered $10,000 since 1990 to anyone who can “prove the theory of evolution.”
Since 1999 the offer has been increased to $250,000:
*NOTE: The word evolution Hovind is referring to is not the minor variations found in all of the various life forms, but the general theory of evolution which believes these five major events took place:
- Time, space, and matter came into existence by themselves.
- Planets and stars formed from space dust.
- Matter created life by itself.
- Early life-forms learned to reproduce themselves.
- Major changes occurred between these diverse life forms (i.e., fish changed to amphibians, amphibians changed to reptiles, and reptiles changed to birds or mammals).
Hovind states that most biology textbooks contain lies and claims that evolution is a secular, pagan religion. He has said, “I’m not trying to get evolution out of the textbooks, nor am I trying to get creationism into the textbooks. What I’m trying to do is get the lies out of the textbooks.”
On November 2, 2006, Hovind and his wife Jo were found guilty by a jury in a Pensacola, Florida federal court of numerous federal tax and tax-related offenses. He has been ordered to forfeit $430,400 and faces a 10 year prison term.
